Think Local....(part II)
Feb 15, 2010
Local book shops are under siege. We should treasure our local stores and help sustain the place amid prices wars with the chain retailers - aren't they all hopelessly run from the very top down - and the likes of Amazon, rich in false economies. My own local, Queens Park Books, boosts a knowledgeable, generous and patient team, who will engage with you in seeking to meet your needs. This is a potential home to all tastes. And educational to boot. My own devotion is more than just a reflection of the care and attention you receive perennially in Queens Park Books. As I have said before this place bolstered my self esteem. When Harper Collins last year published You Bet: The Betfair Story - How two men changed the world of gambling, Queens Park Books naturally enough took stock in support of a local author and indeed researched the possibility of a special display to showcase my work. Undeterred by the pithy title - it really had to be so long - I was then asked whether I thought copies should be signed by me or left for anyone buying to make a request which I could at some stage fulfill. As a compromise, I signed half. I still remember the pleasuring in the weeks that followed on learning direct from the market place that the public favoured signed copies rather than blank editions, the sort of qualitative boost to moral that even an Amazon "five"rating, or shop recommendations from Waterstones cannot achieve. Never bet against Queens Park Books. (see park-life.org).
