Post script to my having six bets on the Grand National, one each for my god children;  over Easter I witnessed a father lift his three-year-old up onto a bar stool so she could have a go on the one-armed bandit. Too early in life, even for me, not least on the basis that no slot machine will deliver the sort of lessons-in-life narrative the National does.
