I am due shortly back at Cambridge to address undergraduates at my old college, Christ's. The topic is "careers in media". I emailed a range of my editors and colleagues about this. "Tell them, don't bother" was a recurring theme. A more compelling message emerged from a conversation earlier this month with a magazine editor. In this I learnt that for three years, he had stepped away from the game. I asked him why he came back.
