A Shoe-In
Mar 04, 2010

Casinos haven't always moved with the times. So I must commend the Ritz Club, underneath the hotel of the same name on Piccadilly, for up-to-date attitudes to a la mode footwear.

Leave aside for a moment the Ritz Club's well deserved reputation as a venue for gambling in comfort. In addition, I find the place a restful retreat for afternoon tea.

On this basis I arranged to meet Blake Mycoskie there for a brew during his visit for London Fashion Week. Blake is the founder of TOMS, a shoemakers with the unique quality of donating for every sale a pair to deserving folk throughout the world and otherwise barefoot and at risk to cuts and infections.

Needless to say of someone proud of what he makes, Blake arrived at the Ritz Club doors sporting a pair of TOMS' new Cordones range. I can confidently say that - unless a devotee such as Sienna Miller had nipped in ahead of us - Blake will have been the first visitor to the Ritz Club so shod. Yet, the brace of doormen steeped in the capital's traditions of gambling were unphased by the novelty below them. Mr Mycoskie was soon installed at the bar, as comfortable in himself as his feet were in TOMS shoes.Casinos haven't always moved with the times. So I must commend the Ritz Club for   up-to-date attitudes to a la mode footwear.

Blake is writing a book about his company's business model. You Bet: The Betfair Story recounts how two men changed the world of gambling. Blake's work should explain how TOMS is a vehicle for good as well as profit. This could in time also change how business addresses the need to trade responsibly.
